Fosston is headed to state in American Legion Baseball for the first time in the history of its program. Post 114 defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Post 397 by a score of 10-3 in the championship game of the 2024 Division II Northwest Sub-State Tournament held in Red Lake Falls, MN. Fosston ran the table, going 4-0 in tournament play to clinch its state tournament berth. Below are recaps of the final two games of the tournament.
DGF Post 397 and Wadena Post 171 locked horns in an elimination game for the right to advance to the sub-state championship. An outstanding performance on the mound propelled DGF to victory as Post 397 took out Wadena by the score of 4-0. DGF's Peyton Aas pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout, allowing one walk while notching three strikeouts. Offensively, DGF plated all four runs in the first three innings. Jacob Severtson (2-for-3, RBI), Cayson Bergee (2B, RBI) and Landon Johnson (1B, RBI) paced DGF's offense.
For Post 171, Isaac Hamann was the tough luck loser. In a complete game himself, he allowed one earned run on five hits, walked one, and struck out six as the defense behind him committed four errors. Wadena ended its season with a third place finish in the NW Sub-State and an overall record of 19-3. All three of Wadena's losses came in the postseason.
Fosston built a hefty lead early en route to its first ever Minnesota Division II Northwest Sub-State Championship on Saturday afternoon. Post 114 took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never trailed. Fosston continued its offensive output with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
Fosston starter Mitchell Mulry earned the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out one. Mulry also had a hit and two runs batted in. Aaron Norland (3-5), Will Christen (3 RBI) and Zach Theis (2-4, RBI) led the way for Fosston at the dish.
Landon Johnson, Alex Anderson and Peyton Aas were the offensive leaders for Post 397 as they all went 2-for-4. DGF finished its season as runners-up in the sub-state with an overall record of 26-11.
Fosston improves its overall record to 18-1 on the season. Post 114 will be making its first ever trip to the 2024 Minnesota State Division 2 Legion Baseball Tournament which opens on Friday, August 2nd in Bird Island. Fosston will play the host team BOLD at 7:30 pm on Friday, August 2nd. The tournament runs from August 2-4 and its format is single-elimination.
