Perham Boys and Girls Claim HOL Cross Country Titles

By Craig Olson - Pelican Rapids, MN

The Perham boys and girls cross country teams successfully defended their long line of Heart O’ Lakes Conference titles on Tuesday in Pelican Rapids. This makes 17 in a row for the boys and 15 in a row for the girls. West Central Area took second place in both races.

The girls kicked it off first by putting all seven runners on the All-Conference team, led by eighth-grader Liz Birkeland who was the individual conference champion. Following closely behind were Caitlin Covington in fourth place, Quincy Anderson in fifth place, Emily VanWatermulen in seventh place, Mya Morris in eighth place, Lauryn Rustad in eleventh place and Hailey Wegscheid in twelfth place.

“All-Conference is top 15 so to put all seven runners All-Conference was pretty special,” commented Perham Head Coach Jeff Morris. “Five of the runners from our top seven are from last years’ state title team with Emily and Quincy the newcomers. We are super excited about the girls race today, especially since today’s course is the toughest course we run all year long. The girls know it is time to get some good training in the next two weeks. We run one last regular season meet in Bemidji on Tuesday.”

The JV girls and the junior high girls also won HOL Conference titles to give the girls a sweep of the titles. Abby Tweeton was the JV winner and Mia Lung won the junior high race.

The boys have been ranked number one all year in the state of Minnesota with West Central Area ranked number two in the state. When it was all said and done the Yellowjackets had a total of 33 points, just eight in front of the Knights at 41. Perham was led by the number four ranked individual runner in the state, Brandon O’Hara, who won the individual title. He was followed closely by Clayton Anderson, Jakob McCleary, Bailey Evenson and Chase Belka who rounded out Perham’s top five and all made the All-Conference team.

“The surprise of the day was eighth-grader Tesfaye Young who earned All-Conference honors in only his third 5k of the season,” said Morris. “Isaac Scheidecker rounded out our top seven, just missing All-Conference honors. The boys have been dealing with some sickness, but it looks like they have turned the corner after today. We are excited to train hard the next two weeks as we enter the final stretch to the season.”

The JV boys turned in a perfect score, led by individual JV champion, Elijah Morris. The boys just missed the sweep with the Junior High team taking second, led by seventh grader Caden Doll who finished sixth overall.
