Ed Winjum (Inducted 2008)

Ed Winjum biography from Hall of Fame Induction 2008.
Ed Winjum (Class of 1963) was the composed general on the field, court and track that led very talented teams in three sports (football, basketball, track) to great success.  Ed was truly an extension of the coach on the field as he had a great mind for sports and knew how to direct his teams many talents to victory.  Ed earned three letters in football and was the team captain, playing quarterback.  He was an All-Conference player in the Heart O' Lakes Conference and was widely recognized as an intuitive and unshakable leader.  Ed led Perham's football team to a 7-1 record his senior year against some stiff competition.
In basketball, Ed was a two-year letter winner as an outstanding point guard and a captain.  Not only could he direct his team, but he coudl light up the scoreboard averaging sixteen points per game on the way to an outstanding 17-1 record and a number one seed in the always tough District 23 one class system tournament.  Once again, Ed was an HOL All-Conference selection.
Winjum showed his extensive athletic ability in track where he earned two letters.  Ed ran the 100 yard dash, the 200 yard dash and was a crucial leg on the Perham record setting mile relay team.  Their mile relay team held the school record for ten years at a time of 3:40.  Ed was a well-rounded athlete and a solid leader.  By the time he graduated, he had earned seven varsity letters in three sports and was selected as the Male Athlete of the Year for 1963.  After graduation Ed was recruited to play football for St. John's and Moorhead State and played at Moorhead State for two years.  Ed graduated from St. Cloud State University and taught at the Fergus Falls Junior High School for five years while coaching track and wrestling.  He also coached basketball and wresting in Perham for three years.
Ed is a charter member of the Yellowjacket Booster Club and helped out in many fundraising activities for Perham Athletic over the years.  Ed is currently an Insurance Agent in Perham and along with his wife Sigrid, raised three children, Scott, Beth and Amy.  Ed has always been a great supporter of Perham Athletics and is a great role model for young athletes.
