Richard Risbrudt Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, June 14, 2004.
When it comes to teaching and coaching excellence at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Richard Risbrudt receives scores of accolades throughout Fergus Falls and the surrounding area.
Risbrudt joins his mentor Bill Colbeck as a member of the Fergus Falls Sports Hall of Fame. He is a 1972 graduate of Ashby High School, and a 1974 graduate of Minnesota State Community and Technical College Fergus Falls (then FFCC). Risbrudt holds a B.A. degree in chemistry from Concordia College (1976) in Moorhead and also studied at Minnesota State University Moorhead, Lutheran Brethren Schools Seminary, and the University of St. Thomas.
While a student at Ashby High School, Risbrudt amazingly participated in five sports: football, basketball, baseball, track and golf. He was captain for football, basketball, baseball, and track. High school honors included all-conference in football, basketball, and baseball. Risbrudt played one year for the Spartan football team and two years on the golf team while at the community college in Fergus Falls.
In the classroom at Hillcrest, Risbrudt's responsibilities include teaching honors chemistry, chemistry, honors biology, biology, algebra and Gospel of Matthew. In 1991, Risbrudt was named Fergus Falls Teacher of the Year. That same year he received the Excellence in Education Award from the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce and was one of 10 teachers in Minnesota to win the Ashland Oil Excellence in Education Award, presented by Governor Arne Carlson.
Risbrudt has coached Hillcrest varsity football for 26 years. Six of his teams have reached the state finals, with the 2001 Comet football team winning the state championship. In football Risbrudt's overall record at Hillcrest is 159-100 over the past 26 years.
He has been named conference coach of the year three times, section coach of the year five times, and in 1998 and 2001 was named Minnesota State 9-Man Football Coach of the Year. In 1999, Risbrudt served as an offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Out-State All-Star football team that defeated the Minnesota Metro All-Star team 17-14 at the University of Macalester.
In addition to head football coaching duties at Hillcrest, Risbrudt has also served as the athletic director for the past 26 years. He succeeded Bill Colbeck s head boys' basketball coach for the Comets, compiling a 30-11 two-year won-lost mark. His Comet basketball team won the District 23 title in 1991.
Risbrudt and his wife, Denise, have three children, Lindsay, 18; Jeffrey, 15; and Nicholas, 12. He enjoys traveling with his family, attending his children's school activities, golfing, and reading.
