Terry Harrington (Inducted 2004)

Terry Harrington Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, June 14, 2004.
For over 30 years Terry Harrington has worked as a teacher and coach in the Fergus Falls public school system. He's widely known as an outstanding coach for boys track and field and for boys and girls cross country.
"I feel that coaching and athletics are only part of the rewarding experiences for me over the years," says Harrington. "Working with all of the young people in the field of education is a privilege. Yes, it can be challenging, but it's also highly rewarding."
With encouragement and advice from coach Harrington, several outstanding Otter boy and girl athletes have excelled for Fergus Falls High School in boys track and boys and girls cross country.
In 1998 Harrington coached the boys cross country team to the state tournament. Four years later, in 2003, he coached the Otter girls cross country team to the state tourney. In 1998 Harrington was named cross country region coach of the year.
The Otter mentor has coached three individual state champion athletes in track and field, and many of his performers have made it to the state tournament, individually, in both track and field and cross country. In 1976 and 1982 Harrington was named track and field region coach of the year.
He served as vice president and president of the State Coaches Association, and was a region coaches representative for 12 years. Harrington has worked at 28 state track meets and has spoken three times at state coaches clinics.
Harrington, hired by the Fergus Falls public school system in the early 1970s, succeeded the late Fran Conito as a physical education instructor in Fergus Falls. Conito was a charter member of the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.
A native of Halstad, Minnesota, Harrington participated in high school football, basketball, and track and field. At Halstad, where he graduated in 1965, he set four records in track and field, and was a state entrant in two events.
Then it was on to Moorhead State College, now Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where he was co-captain in track and field and ran in national competition seven times. Harrington was seventh in the nationals in the 120 high hurdles. He was named Most Valuable Athlete at Moorhead State in 1969. Harrington also was a member of the Student Senate and had membership in the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity.
He and his wife, Cheryl, have two children, Ryan and Stacia. He has served on many committees at Federated Church, Fergus Falls.
