Bill Foss (Inducted 2001)

Bill Foss Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, June 9, 2001.
Bill Foss, a 1948 Fergus Falls High School grad who starred as a football player at the University of Minnesota, will join his brother Mark as an inductee into the Chamber of Commerce Sports Hall of Fame.
Foss played varsity football as a freshman for the Otters when his older brother Mark was a senior for Fergus Falls in the fall of 1944. "I was at one end position and Mark was at the other end position," recalls Bill. "It was a thrill playing with my older brother and also lettering as a freshman."
Bill also participated in basketball, baseball, and track for the Otters. During his senior year, in 1948, he won the high hurdles in every meet with the exception of the state track meet where he took fifth.
In college Mark Foss and Bill Foss headed separate ways-Mark to the University of North Dakota and Bill to the University of Minnesota whee he played under legendary Gophers coach Bernie Bierman.
"Freshmen weren't allowed to participate with the varsity team," Bill recalls, "but I had a satisfying first year playing for freshman coach Butch Nash."
Foss won a starting job with the Gopher football team, at end, late in his sophomore season. He started every game for the Gophers his junior and senior years, mostly at offensive end but also occasionally at defensive end, offensive tackle, and special teams.
"Bernie Bierman was a great coach, but he also had some good assistants like Nash who later became my end coach for the varsity. Bernie retired after my sophomore year and was replaced by Wes Fesler who I played for my junior and senior years.
"I also took the opportunity to play in some intramural sports at the U, including hockey, basketball, wrestling, baseball, boxing, and swimming. It was a great experience."
Foss played one year of football while in the Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where the team finished 10-1-1. He continued to serve as a member of the Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Foss' career was as a subcontractor for aluminum storefronts, windows, aluminum curtain walls, glass, and other products.
Foss resides with his wife Jeanne in Columbia, South Carolina.
