Milt Papke Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, August 2, 1993.
Milt Papke, an all-around Otter athlete and 1950 Fergus High grad, took his skills to the University of Minnesota where he was a member of both the Gopher varsity basketball and golf teams.
The 6-1 170-pound Papke was a 5-sport letter winner at Fergus High, in football, basketball, baseball, golf, and track. He was MVP in football and captain in both golf and basketball. Milt was all-conference in basketball and football, attaining the same basketball honor at the district and region levels.
Milt was district and regional golf medalist three years and participated in both the state high school and state Jaycee tournaments three successive years. He won the initial Northwest Junior Golf Tournament at Pebble Lake in 1947 and repeated in 1950.
After his participation with basketball and golf at the U of M (1950 to 1954), Papke was a basketball starter and golf captain on Fort Belvoir, Virginia, post teams while on active duty in the military. He served 30 years with the U.S. Army Reserves as an Engineer Officer, retiring with the rank of Colonel.
As a civilian he worked 30 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (manager) in Washington, D.C. For nearly 40 years he has worked as a basketball referee and officiated in over 5,000 games (high school, junior college, military, and recreation). He is presently the golf coach at two high schools in Virginia.
Milt and his wife, Bette, have seven children: Mary, John, Karen, Susan, Amy, David, and Heidi and nine grandchildren.
