Inga Nelson (Inducted 1990)

Inga Nelson Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, July 28, 1990.
Inga Nelson helped organize and coach the AAU (now USS) swim program in Fergus Falls. As a volunteer she coached the synchronized swim team from 1972 to 1986 and since 1978 has coached men's and women's diving. All of this is in addition to her volunteer efforts in water safety programs.
Under her leadership, the synchronized swimmers from Fergus Falls have qualified and placed at the state meet in both team and duet competition. There have been five sectional champions in diving along with ten qualifiers for the state meet. In 1988 Inga was named Sectional Diving Coach of the Year.
Mrs. Nelson has been involved with the Red Cross water safety program since 1960 in Otter Tail, Becker, and Douglas Counties. She was appointed Instructor Trainer in 1971 and served as Water Safety Chairperson ten years in Otter Tail County.
A native of Evanston, Illinois, she competed in swimming at Gustavus Adolphus College at St. Peter, Minnesota, and was the first woman to win an athletic letter at Gustavus. Inga was also the first woman to compete on a men's swim team in the MIAC Conference. She traveled with the Tommy Bartlet water show in 1951.
She coached the Gustavus Adolphus synchronized swim team from 1951 to 1953. As a coach she also relied on her participation with other sports and activities during high school and college. Among them were intramural basketball, volleyball, softball, and rifle club.
She and her husband, Harlan, watched their four daughters (Ingrid, Lucia, Anna, and Kersti) participate in swimming programs at Fergus Falls.
