Carolyn Schmidt (Inducted 1990)

Carolyn Schmidt Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, July 28, 1990.
Carolyn Schmidt has played a major role in the advancement of girls' athletics in the Fergus Falls public school system. Many female athletes developed their skills under Schmidt's guidance during the 1970s and 1980s, following the years when intramural sports were the only ones available to girls in the state of Minnesota.
Gymnastics started in Fergus Falls in 1971 and Schmidt coached girls' varsity gymnastics from 1972 to 1987. In 1975 the Otters attained the sectional team championship and were representatives in the state gymnastics meet. Several individuals on her gymnastics teams competed in the state Class A Gymnastics Meet from 1975 through 1983.
She was the first volleyball coach in Fergus Falls, with 1978 being the first year. She coached the Otters' varsity volleyball team from 1978 to 1985. Her teams were runners-up to Moorhead in the sub-regional finals in 1981, 1982, and 1985.
Schmidt, who is a physical education teacher at the Fergus Falls Middle School, currently serves as coach for the 8th grade volleyball team and also coaches the VFW II girls softball team during the summer. The latter is a young team of girls playing in the Women's League.
A native of Lakota, North Dakota, she attended high school in the 1960s when school girls' athletics was nonexistent. She did, however, coach and play on the Lakota summer softball team from 1967 through 1969. Then it was on to North Dakota State University in Fargo where she participated in volleyball and basketball from 1966 through 1969. She also played field hockey at NDSU in 1968.
Schmidt was named outstanding women's basketball player at NDSU in 1969, outstanding women's volleyball player in both 1968 and 1969, and was recipient of the Outstanding Physical Education Senior Award in 1969.
Additional rewards have also come her way. She was Fergus Falls Teacher of the Year in 1984. MVP of the Maplewood slow pitch softball tourney in 1973, and participated with her summer softball team in the national Class C softball tournament at Midland, Texas, in 1988. For 20 years she has played on summer softball teams in Fergus Falls.
