Gloria Mielke (Inducted 1987)

Gloria Mielke Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 27, 1987.
Gloria Mielke participated in swimming, gymnastics, and track at Fergus Falls High School and later took part in swimming at Hamline University and the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul.
In high school swimming, she was co-captain in 1975 and 1977, and was named the most valuable swimmer in 1974, 1976, and 1977. (She was tied with Carrie Hefte for MVS honors in 1975.) Gloria was team scoring leader in 1976 and 1977, and scored 891.5 points in her high school swimming career. She set several regional records and participated in the state swim meets in 1975, 1976, and 1977.
In state swim competition, Mielke placed in the top 12 a total of eight times. Her best finish was third in the 50 butterfly (1975) and third in the 100 freestyle (1977). The Otter swim team had an undefeated dual-meet swim record in 1977-78.
In four years of varsity swimming (dual meets, invitationals, and regional competition) she took first place in all but six races, a remarkable accomplishment, notes swim coach Dave Lindig.
In gymnastics, Mielke participated in four state tournaments, from 1975 to 1978. As a freshman she qualified in vault competition and in 1976 finished in sixth place at the state meet in the unevens. She qualified for state in 1977 on unevens, beam, floor exercise, vault, and all-around. Her senior year she advanced to the state meet in beam, unevens, and all around. She was named the Otter "outstanding gymnast" in 1976, 1977, and 1978.
In track, Gloria was a 3-year letter winner. In 1977 she set a school record in the 180-yard hurdles, and was a regional qualifier in the shot put and discus. In 1978, her senior year, she set a school record in the discus and was again a regional qualifier in the shot put and discus.
At Fergus Falls High School, Mielke had other interests in addition to athletics. She was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in varsity band, concert band, pep band, concert choir, synchronized swimming, and was a snoball attendant.
She currently resides in Wichita, Kansas, where she is employed as a Registered Nurse, working in the field of ophthalmic surgery.
