George Sawyer (Inducted 1987)

George Sawyer Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 27, 1987.
George Sawyer was a 5-sport letter winner at Fergus Falls High School before he graduated in 1953, making him one of the top Otter athletes in the entire decade of the 1950s. In later years he became well known as an outstanding coach at Wheaton High School, where he still serves as a teacher, athletic director, and head baseball coach.
He currently ranks 10th among active baseball coaches in Minnesota, with 215 victories during his 29 years at the helm of Wheaton Warrior baseball.
At Fergus Falls, Sawyer lettered in football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis. Highlights included basketball MVP honors in 1953, and participation in three state high school tennis tournaments. He also participated with the Fergus American Legion baseball team in a state tournament, gaining team MVP honors.
For the high school Otters, the 5-10 and 165-pound Sawyer was a football running back and defensive safety for Hall of Famer and coach Norm Galloway. He was a guard on the basketball court, gaining all-conference honors in 1953, the same year he was captain of the squad that finished 13-5 during the regular season. When the winter season was through, Sawyer played second base on the Otter baseball team (coached by Hall of Famer John Hermes), participated in track squad dashes, and if that weren't enough, he also squeezed in a few tennis matches for the Otters.
Following his stalwart athletic career at Fergus High, Sawyer went on to play basketball at Concordia College in Moorhead, from 1953 to 1956. During the summer months he returned to his home area and played for three different town baseball teams: Underwood, Dalton, and Fergus Falls.
Sawyer is in his 30th year at Wheaton High School. He and his wife, Joyce, have four children, Carrie, Jill, Craig, and Jeff.
