Dick Werner (Inducted 1987)

Dick Werner Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 27, 1987.
Dick Werner, a 5-sport letter winner at Fergus Falls High School who later starred at Bemidji State University, received the most votes in the 1987 Fergus Falls Hall of Fame selection process. He joins another 5-sport letter winner, George Sawyer, also a 1987 Hall of Fame inductee.
Werner also joins his high school football coach, Rocky Elton, as a 1987 inductee. He was a senior lineman under coach Elton, in 1961, when the Otter football team finished with a 7-1 record. In addition to football, Werner also lettered in high school hockey, wrestling, track, and baseball.
At Bemidji State, Werner was a letterman in football, as a tackle, for four consecutive years, leading to a tryout with Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers. At BSU, he also lettered in track, hockey, and baseball. In 1986 he was named to the BSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
For over 18 years Werner has been active in the Fergus Falls Hockey Association, serving as a board member and coach. His sporting goods business, Dick Werner Sales, sponsors a youth (Squirts) traveling hockey team. Additionally, Werner has also served his hometown as a member of the park and recreation board.
His athletic awards in high school were numerous. He was a 1961 WCCO radio all-state high school football selection, and an all-conference choice in 1960. He won the 1962 District 23 high school heavyweight wrestling title, earned five letters in hockey, was on the 1961 Otter state tournament baseball team, and won conference and district discus titles in track.
At Bemidji State, he earned three track letters as a discus thrower and set a school record in the event. On the BSU baseball team, he was a pitcher and first baseman. He graduated with a degree in history and art.
Werner and his wife, Judy, have three sons, twins Kurk and Kris, and son Dan. All three sons have participated in the Fergus Falls hockey program.
