Rocky Elton (Inducted 1987)

Rocky Elton  Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 27, 1987.
Rocky Elton and football went hand-in-hand for the 1951 Fergus High grad who starred in high school and later at the University of Minnesota. He also coached his alma mater, FFHS, as football coach for the Otters from 1958 to 1962, following the legendary footsteps of Otter coach and Fergus Hall of Famer Norm Galloway.
His official name is Burnham T. Elton, but he has been known as Rocky most of his life. Of special significance is Elton's leadership of the 1961 Otter football team to a 7-1 record, a squad that included Hall of Famers Barry Johnson and Dick Werner.
As an Otter football player in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Elton established himself as an excellent football guard, at 5-10 and 195 pounds. He was all-conference (Minn-kota) and all-state WCCO in football while at Fergus High, also making the all-state squad selected by the University of Minnesota.
In addition to athletics, Elton participated in the high school Thespian Club, was in the Honor Society, and played in the band.
Elton made the University of Minnesota football team four consecutive years from 1951 to 1954 and earned letters in the latter three years. He was on the all-Big Ten Scholastic Team featured in "Look" Magazine.
After his five years of teaching and coaching at Fergus High, Elton became assistant football coach in Bloomington, where he has taught history the past 24 years. During this time frame he also served as an assistant coach at Edina East for three years, in addition to 20 years as an assistant in Bloomington.
In the military, Elton was a jet pilot in the Air Force and in 1983 retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lt. Col. with 28 years of service. In the Reserves he flew C-119s and C-130 Hercules, also flying in a recent Fergus Falls Airfest. In 1957 he played football with the Air Force Shaw AFB commanders.
Elton and his wife, Marian, have three children, Kimberly, John, and Thomas. They also have four grandchildren.
