Melvyn (Muggs) Townsend (Inducted 1987)

Melvyn (Muggs) Townsend Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 27, 1987.
Melvyn (Muggs) Townsend, a 1931 Fergus High grad, was an excellent athlete who is probably better known to the younger generation as a conservationist and a protector of fish and wildlife.
In 1975 Townsend received the Izaak Walton Conservation Award and the following year, in 1976, was honored with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Bald Eagle Award. Over the years he was also well known at county and state fairs, selling hot dogs while operating a food concession business. A lifelong resident of Fergus Falls, Muggs was also engaged in the retail business.
At Fergus Falls High School, he was a football guard and tackle, played the guard position in basketball, was a baseball catcher, and also participated in tennis. He was football MVP in 1929 and was basketball captain in 1930-31.
After his athletic career at Fergus High, Townsend went on to play football at Macalester College in St. Paul where he served as captain in 1934. He also participated in baseball and wrestling at Macalester. He performed well at 6-feet and 185 pounds.
Townsend and his wife, Katherine, have five children, Carol, George, Margaret, Alice, and Nancy. After his return from college, Muggs was active in Fergus Falls city basketball leagues for many years.
