Noel Olson (Inducted 1987)

Noel Olson Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 27, 1987.
      Noel Olson, present commissioner of the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was a top-notch athlete at Fergus Falls High School and also at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
      A 1950 Fergus High grad, Olson was a football end, basketball center, baseball outfielder, and tennis participant for the Otters. His basketball honors included Otter MVP, captain, all-conference, all-district, and all-region recognition.
      The 6-4 Olson played at 185 pounds in high school and 200 pounds in college. In addition to his basketball honors, he won the regional singles tennis title in 1950 and was on the winning regional doubles team in 1949. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.
      At St. Olaf he was a football end, basketball center, and a member of the college tennis team. He was an all-conference selection in basketball and a member of the Blue Key Honor Society. He also played basketball in the Air Force. In 1985 Olson was named to the St. Olaf Athletic Hall of Fame.
      Olson previously served one year as high school basketball coach at Fertile, Minnesota. He spent five years in Virginia, Minnesota, where he was high school basketball coach as well as football coach at Virginia Junior College. At the University of Minnesota, Morris, he was basketball coach for six years. Then it was on to St. Cloud State University where he was basketball coach for 12 seasons and athletic director for eight years.
      A current resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Olson travels extensively in his job as commissioner of the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He and his wife, Kathy, have two daughters, Julie and Carole.
