Fergus Falls Legion Team Beats DL Twice

By Craig Olson - Detroit Lakes, MN

The Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 baseball team opened their season with a sweep of Detroit Lakes, winning 10-9 in their first game and then taking a 14-4 victory in game two.

Cole Fronning started on the mound in game one and went the first five innings.  Fronning left with a 9-1 lead having struck out seven, walked four batters and allowed just three hits.  After DL tied the game with eight consecutive runs, only two of which were earned, Eric Salvesen came into the game in the bottom of the sixth and went the final one-and-a-third innings, recording three strikeouts and picking up the win.  Salvesen (2-4, 3RBI, 2R), JK Brimhall (3-5, 3RBI, 2B, 3R) and Nic Pearson (2-4, HR, 2RBI) were the leading hitters for Post 30. Pearson led off the top of the seventh with the game winning home run to left field.

"Give Nic credit as he came through with his first career home run in a big siutation after they had just tied it and had all the momentum," commented Post 30 Head Coach Trevor Larson.

In game two, Nathan Zierden (5IP, 5K, 4BB, 5H, 4ER) went the distance and gained the win.  Logan Wentworth (2-2, 2B, 3RBI), Cole Fronning (2-2, 2B, 2RBI) and Marshall King (2-2, 3B, 3RBI) led the offensive attack.

"This was the response I was hoping for after game one," said Coach Larson.  "We jumped on DL right away in the top of the first for seven runs.  Nathan threw strikes and the defense made plays behind him.  Marshall had a great diving stop to his left at first base and Nathan made two nice fielding plays to help his own cause.  Overall, it's always nice to start the year and the district schedule with two road wins.  Our starting pitchers gave us a chance to win by throwing strikes.  Our defense played well except for one inning.  We need to clean that up if we want to compete with the top teams in the district."

Fergus Falls will play at Wahpeton Wednesday at 7:00pm.
