Spartan Golfers Fourth After Two Rounds of National Tournament

By Craig Olson - Chautauqua, NY

The M State Men’s Golf team shot a 318 in round two of the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Wednesday at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, New York, placing them fourth, 18 strokes behind defending champion Georgia Military who took the lead with a 303 and a two day total of 621. The Spartans have a total of 639 and are one shot out of third place.

“It was a day that was so close to being a great round for our team, but unfortunately we just couldn’t finish it off on the last three holes,” commented M State Head Coach Jason Retzlaff.  “Overall, our players got off to much better starts to their rounds and I felt we had a better grasp of the greens today as well.  We simply had too many big numbers late in the round that turned a potentially great round into a solid round.  I think we are very close and can hopefully put up a low number tomorrow."

Hunter Moen led the Spartans with a 76 and moved into a tie for eleventh place individually with a score of 156. Mason Landborg fired a 77 and is tied for second overall in the individual competition with a 152, only two strokes behind the leader Trey May (150) of Georgia Military.

“Hunter Moen was very steady today with twelve pars, one birdie and nothing worse than a bogey,” noted Retzlaff. “After struggling on his front nine yesterday, he has played tremendous golf.  Mason also backed up his 75 with a very nice round today and is right near the top of the leaderboard.”

Other Spartan scores included an 82 from Blake Bloedorn (83-82-165), an 83 from Nick Kress (83-83-166) and an 88 from Jordan Kern (84-88-172).
