Baseball Season Ends for Pelican Rapids

By Craig Olson - Glenwood, MN

The Pelican Rapids baseball team ended their season with a 6-3 loss to the #1 South seed in Section 6A, the Border West Bucs.

Border West jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on 3 hits and a Sam Adelman base hit.  Adelman went 3 for 3 on the day and also pitched a complete game for the winners.

Pelican got one back in the 3rd when Damien Britten led off with a single and went to 3rd on Braden Sillerud’s base hit.  Sillerud advanced to 3rd on the throw in the attempt to get Britten at 3rd.   Reggie Funk’s ground out scored Britten but a strikeout and line out ended the threat.

The Buc’s increased their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Bryce Hoffman and Austin Kipp sandwiched around a single by James Conroy.

The Vikings threatened in the 4th when they loaded the bases with one out on a walk and 2 hit batters but did not score as 2 strikeouts followed.  The Vikings came back with 2 in the 5th inning when with 2 outs, Nick Schermerhorn singled and Jacob Gottenborg homered.  It was Gottenborg’s 6th home run of the year, a new Pelican Rapids single season record.  The Vikings managed only one more base runner in the last 2 innings, another Britten single.

Matt Osborne relieved starting pitcher Oakley Kress in the 5th and got out of a one out, bases loaded jam with only one run scoring.  The Bucs added one more in the 6th on Adelman’s single and Hoffman’s double to account for the 6-3 final score.  The Vikings went down in order in the 7th, ending their season with an 11-13 record.

“We had our opportunities in this game but 7 walks and 2 hit batters were a significant factor,” commented Assistant Coach Steve Babb.  “We also had 3 errors, while Border West had none.  I think Adelman was the difference in the game as he reached base all 4 times and pitched a very good game, mixing up his pitches very well.  The Vikings were out hit 10-6. It’s always hard when you lose the last game of the season and have to say good-bye to the seniors, but they can take pride in what they accomplished this year.”
