Panthers Eliminate Knights in 6A Baseball Playoffs

By Craig Olson - Glenwood, MN

The Parkers Prairie Panthers eliminated the West Central Area Knights on Tuesday in the Section 6A baseball playoffs, beating the Knights by the score of 7-4 at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood.

An RBI single by Grant Beukens drove in the first run of the game and gave West Central Area a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  The hit scored Trysten Gapp who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by Ross Anderson.

A three-run bottom of the third gave Parkers Prairie a 3-1 advantage.  With one out Matt Ferley struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but reached first base on an errant throw by Anderson.  Three batters later Alex Koep delivered a 2-run triple and another run scored on an error.

A solo home run by Mason Nibbe with two outs in the fourth cut the Panthers lead to 3-2 and West Central Area regained the lead in the fifth on a pair of walks, a pair of sacrifice bunts, a wild pitch and a single by Isaiah Sykora, making it 4-3 WCA.

A two-out, two-run single by Colton Booker brought home Travis Yohnke and Alex Koep who had both singled earlier in the inning and Parkers Prairie went back on top, 5-4.

The Panthers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Alex Koep, giving him 4 RBI on the day.

Parkers Prairie had ten hits in the game and also capitalized on four West Central Area errors which led to four unearned runs.

Reliever Josh Helling pitched two-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

West Central Area starter Nathan Kaye took the loss, striking out seven and walking two in five-and-a-third innings.

The Knights end the season with a record of 13-7.

Parkers Prairie went on to knock out Border West with a 9-7 victory in their elimination game.  The Panthers will play Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Thursday for the right to face the only unbeaten team left in the double elimination tournament, New York Mills for the title.
