Vikings Knock Chargers Out of Playoffs with 1-0 Win

By Brian Perleberg - Evansville, MN

Pelican Rapids scored the lone run of the game in the top of the 10th inning on Tuesday as they knocked Brandon-Evansville out of the Section 6A baseball playoffs.

With one out, Damien Britten hit a one out double and moved to third base on Reggie Funk’s single. Leadoff hitter Hayden Christenson then delivered a run scoring single to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

“This was a fantastic pitching duel between Oakley Kress and Brandon Merritt,” said B-E Head Coach Brian Perleberg

Kress pitched 7 innings of shutout ball before handing it over to Matt Osborne, who pitched the last three innings to pick up the win. Merritt pitched nine innings of shutout ball before giving up the lone run of the game in the 10th.

“Both defenses made big plays all game long to steal the momentum away from the offensive teams,” noted Perleberg. “It was an exciting high school tournament game to be part of and one that offered both teams multiple opportunities to take the lead throughout the game. Hats off to Pelican Rapids on a hard fought win.”

Taylor Bitzan went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Marshall Riedel, Tanner Bitzan and Darrin Wibstad had one hit each.

"Osborne, after a mound visit from head coach Adam Johnson, bore down and got the final out on a strikeout, preserving the win," reported Coach Steve Babb of Pelican Rapids.  "Besides the pitching, this was a solid defensive effort by the Vikings with only one error.  In a game that could have gone either way, we were fortunate to get the big hit.  I am very thankful we won this game, but you have to feel a bit for Brandon-Evansville as this was a tough game for them to lose."

“I’d like to thank our eight seniors for their commitment and dedication to our program,” added Perleberg. “They work hard and do everything we have asked of them and I will truly miss having them in our dugout next season.”
