In their second round playoff game with the Little Falls Flyers the Fergus Falls softball team left it all on the field but came up just short with a final score of 5-4 in favor of the Flyers.
The game began with a two out rally base hit by Amzie Aho. Aho made it to third on a single by Nycole Mouritsen, unfortunately the Otters left both runners on base. In the bottom of the first the Flyers sent three to the plate and failed to score.
In the top of the second only one Otter reached base but was unable to score. The Flyers came out in the second and managed to score a run on a base hit.
The Otter bats got rolling in the top of the third and were able to bring in one run off of a single, tying the score. Once again in the bottom of the third the Flyers sent the top of their line up to the plate and the Otters retired them in order.
As the Otters came up to bat in the fourth they had one base hit but again were unable to convert. For the third time the Otters were able to bring up three Flyers to the plate and take out each one.
Neither team scored again until the sixth inning rolled around. The Otters were able to score one run off of a base hit by Samantha Evavold and RBI by Gretchen Davis. The Flyers were able to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth off of one base hit and two walks.
For the last time the Otters came up to the plate with a two run deficit in the top of the seventh. Aho got on base by a fielders’ choice. With two outs and one runner on base Mouritsen came up to the plate and hit a two run home run over the right field fence to tie the game.
With the game tied going into the bottom of the seventh both teams were ready to leave it all on the field. The Flyers were able to score the winning run off of two base hits.
“The otters played a great game and surpassed expectations for the season,” commented Head Coach Monte Fredrickson.
Fergus Falls was led by Nycole Mouritsen (3-4, R, 2B, HR, SB, 3 RBI), Evavold (2-4, R) and Katie Mach (RBI).
"I feel so bad for Tori Ratz (6.1IP, 5K, 3BB, 4H, 4R, 2ER), she pitched such a good game today,” noted Coach Fredrickson. "I really would like to take this opportunity to thank my seniors. Once again to Alex Mckinnell, Katie Mach, Kate Kotschevar and Jenna LaPorte, thanks for a great season. Finally, I want to say how proud I was of the younger girls, I truly can't wait for next year."
