Vikings End Regular Season with 6-2 Win Over Ashby

By Craig Olson - Pelican Rapids, MN

The Pelican Rapids baseball team finished off their regular season with a 6-2 home field win over the Ashby Arrows on Tuesday.

Pelican used 3 different pitchers with Hayden Christenson going the first 2, Nick Schermerhorn the next 4 and Matt Osborne getting the 7th.

Ashby got on the board first with 2 runs in the 3rd on back-to-back singles from Christian Koefod and Scott Johnson, a sacrifice fly and a passed ball.  The Vikings came back in their half of the inning with 4 of their own.  Christenson led off with a single, stole 2nd and scored on Schermerhorn’s single.  After Schermerhorn was out on an attempted steal, Jacob Gottenborg and Dillon Such walked.  Jayden Rutherford ran for Gottenborg and scored on Oakley Kress’ line single to center.  2 passed balls allowed Such to score with Kress advancing to 3rd.  Braden Sillerud walked and stole 2nd.  On the errant throw on the steal, Kress scored.  Schermerhorn didn’t allow a runner to get past 2nd in his next 3 innings of work on the mound.

The Vikings got 2 more insurance runs in the 6th.  Kress walked and Sillerud walked to lead off the inning.  Kress stole 3rd when the catcher tried to pick Sillerud off 1st.  After Sillerud stole 2nd, Damien Britton reached on a walk, Reggie Funk greeted Ashby reliever Jaden Norby with a single to right, scoring Kress and Sillerud.  The Arrows escaped further damage by retiring the top of the order on an infield fly, a fielders’ choice and Gottenborg’s line out to left.

Osborne got into a one out jam in the 7th with runners on 2nd and 3rd but struck out the Ashby 3 and 4 hitters to end the game.

Both teams had 6 hits, with Schermerhorn having 2 for the Vikings.  He also picked up the win on the mound.  Olson took the loss for the Arrows.  The running game played a significant factor in the win as the Vikings had 9 stolen bases with Kress having 3 of them.

“It was a good way to end the regular season but there are still some things to clean up as we begin tournament play,” said Coach Steve Babb.
