Panthers Edge Chargers on Walk-Off Homer by Ferley

By Craig Olson - Parkers Prairie, MN

Matt Ferley launched a three-run walk-off home run on Monday, lifting Parkers Prairie to a 5-3 victory over Brandon-Evansville.

“Give credit to Parkers, they kept battling and found a way to get it done,” commented Head Coach Brian Perleberg of Brandon-Evansville. “We made four errors in the last two innings, which really hurt and opened the door for them to make their run.   The important thing is that we learn from our mistakes and use them as motivation to get better.”

The Chargers opened the scoring with two runs in the third. Darrin Wibstad was hit by a pitch to start the inning and later scored on Keagan Schiele’s sacrifice fly. Jake Hintermeister delivered a two-out RBI double, scoring Marshall Riedel to give B-E a 2-0 lead.

The Chargers added a single run in the fourth when Tanner Bitzan led off with a single, moved to second on a base hit by Taylor Bitzan and scored on a single by Corbin Olson

Parkers Prairie scored once in the sixth when Ferley reached on a misplayed fly ball to centerfield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He then scored on an error, cutting the B-E lead to 3-1.

The climactic bottom of the seventh started with a lead-off walk to Alex Koep. The next hitter reached on an error and Brady Hopped laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up. After an error allowed Koep to score to put the score at 3-2, Ferley stepped to the plate and hit the game winning homer.

Brandon Merritt pitched one heck of a game for us,” stated Coach Perleberg. “He threw a complete game and didn’t give up an earned run. He kept his composure on the mound when things weren’t going our way and battled until the end. I’m very proud of his effort today.”
