Vikings Split Baseball Double Header with Frazee

By Craig Olson - Frazee, MN

The Pelican Rapids baseball team split a double header with Frazee on Tuesday, winning the first game 2-0 before losing the 2nd game 5-3.

Oakley Kress pitched the finest high school game in his career with a 2 hit, complete game shutout in the opener.   Only one Frazee player reached 2nd base the entire game and that was on an infield error.  Pelican got on the board with a single run in the 4th inning when Hayden Christenson led off with a walk and went to 2nd on Nick Schermerhorn’s bunt single.  After a strikeout, Dillon Such singled to load the bases.  After another strikeout, Tyler Haarstick continued his clutch hitting with a line drive single to right, scoring Christenson.  The Vikings got an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Jacob Gottenborg singled to lead off the inning and after reaching 2nd, he was thrown out on a close plate at the plate after Such singled, who went to 2nd on the play.  Haarstick followed with a fly ball that was misplayed, scoring Such.  Kress shut down the Hornets in the top of the 7th after a one out single and finished with 8 strikeouts and only one walk.  Thomas Stenger was the hard luck loser for the Hornets.  Getting the 2 base hits were Tanner Tappe and Jaden Guhlke.

In the 2nd game, Pelican rallied from a 5-0 deficit with 3 runs in the 3rd but could get no closer, losing 5-3.  Frazee, as the home team, got a run in the 1st inning on a single, an error and a fielders’ choice.  The Vikings avoided any further damage when right fielder Reggie Funk caught a fly ball and threw to 1st, catching the runner off the bag for a double play.  The Hornets increased their lead with 4 runs in the 2nd after the first 2 batters were retired.  2 singles, a walk and another single plated 2 runs.  Two more scored after a 3rd strike got by the catcher, then was followed by an infield error.  The Vikings got back into the game with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd.  Christenson walked and scored on Schermerhorn’s double.   Gottenborg was hit by a pitch and both runners scored when Such’s ground ball was misplayed and thrown into right field.  Braden Sillerud relieved starting pitcher Matt Osborne in the 4th, without giving up a run.  The Vikings mounted a threat in the final inning of the 5 inning game when Gottenborg reached on an error.  He was out at 2nd on Such’s fielders’ choice grounder.  Such advanced to 3rd on Osborne’s line drive single (his 2nd of the game) to put the tying runs on base with one out.  However, line drive outs off the bats of Haarstick and Kress finished the game.  Osborne got the loss and was the victim of 3 unearned Hornet runs.  He struck out one and walked one.  Damien Britton got the only other hitter for the Vikings. Mason Newling and Tappe pitched for Frazee, with Tappe getting the final 2 outs in the game.
