Wolverines Top Bulldogs 7-2

By Craig Olson - Battle Lake, MN

Wadena-Deer Creek posted a 7-2 win over Ottertail Central in high school baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Battle Lake.

Wyatt Hamann drove in Preston Warren when he singled in the top of the first. The Bulldogs evened things up at one in the bottom of the first inning when Cole Brandner doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. “I knew it would be big to even the game early,” said Brandner, “l just put a good swing on a pitch I thought I could handle, then Brodey Rocholl used his speed to score all the way from first base.”

WDC got the lead back in the third when Jake Dykhoff singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Warren.

Wadena-Deer Creek scored five runs in the fifth inning. Noah Ross, Dykhoff, Hamann, and Isaac Witthuhn all drove in runs in the frame. “This inning got away from us a bit,” mentioned OTC Bulldog coach Ryan Hendrickson, “WDC did well putting the ball in play, we just had to do a better job making the simple plays. I think the guys were just trying to do too much. They are competitive and wanted to make the big play instead of getting outs. I can’t blame anyone for that because if the big play was made the game could have changed our way too.”

Justin Dykhoff was credited with the victory for Wadena-Deer Creek. He lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six and walking one.

Daxton Olson took the loss for Bulldogs. He lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs but only 4 runs were earned due to the struggle in the 5th inning.

Drake Larsen led the Bulldogs with two hits in three at bats.

Wadena-Deer Creek racked up nine hits on the day. Dykhoff, Ross, Preston Warren, and Hamann each had multiple hits for Wadena-Deer Creek. Dykhoff went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Next up for the Bulldogs they have a conference double header versus Sebeka on Thursday at 4:00pm and a single game versus West Central Area on Friday at 4:30pm, all of which are home games in Battle Lake.
