The Brandon-Evansville baseball team erupted for 11 first-inning runs on the way to a 14-4 win over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in the first game of their double header on Monday. The Chargers completed the sweep with a 16-1 victory in game two.
Hillcrest started out hot in the opening inning of game #1. Sam Ihrke led off the game with a hit by pitch and advanced on an error. Nick Foss came through with an RBI double giving the Comets an early lead. Hillcrest added onto that lead with another double by Thomas Zwiers staking the visitors to an early 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the opening frame, the Chargers sent fourteen batters to the plate and regained the momentum with an eleven run inning thanks to doubles by Nick Thorstad, Taylor Bitzan, and Jake Hintermeister as well as a two triples by Marshall Riedel.
“It was great to see the bats get going early in this game,” stated B-E Head Coach Brian Perleberg. “Several guys were putting good swings on the ball today and we were able to stay disciplined and not swing at pitches out of the zone.”
The Chargers pitching staff settled in after the rough start and were able to quiet the Hillcrest bats and not allowing another earned run the rest of the game.
“Nick Thorstad and Marshall Riedel came in and gave us some quality relief pitching and their defense played solid behind them,” noted Perleberg.
Offensive leaders for the Chargers were Riedel (2-4, 3R, 2 RBI, SB), Gaven Jacobson (2-2, 2B, BB, SB, 3R), Taylor Bitzan (2-3, 2 2B, R) and Nick Thorstad (1-2, 2B, R).
In game two, the Chargers grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Riedel singled, stole second, and scored on Jake Hintermeisters’s triple. Hintermeister then scored on an error off of the bat of Keagan Schiele.
The Comets cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first when Sam Ihrke scored on Hunter Christopherson’s RBI double.
Brandon-Evansville broke the game open with nine runs in the 3rd and added five more in the 4th. Extra base hits by Keagan Schiele, Tanner Bitzan, and Taylor Bitzan as well as a two run single from Alek Pikkeraine sparked the big rally for the Chargers.
“Taylor Bitzan and Jake Hintermeister combined to give us five quality innings on the mound and the offense came up with some key hits when we needed them,” added Coach Perleberg.
Leaders at the plate for B-E were Corbin Olson (2-4, 4 RBI), Taylor Bitzan (2-3, 2R, 2 RBI, 2 2B) and Alex Pikkeraine (2-4, 2R, 3 RBI).
