The West Central Area softball team took on Hillcrest in Fergus falls on Friday, May 11 with the Knights sweeping both games of their double header. The first game finished after six innings with a score of 10-0 and the second finished with a score of 12-2 after six innings.
In game one, Brianna Kreft and Hailey Bennett shared the game to throw the shutout. Brianna Kreft pitched the first three innings allowing no runs, one hit and struck out six. Hailey Bennett threw the last three innings of the game taking the win for WCA. She allowed no hits, no runs and struck out three. “I was extremely proud of how these two dominated on the mound,” said WCA Head Coach Vanessa McNamara.
In the box, the knights were led by Lexi Bright who went 2-4 at the plate and Ellie Herman who went 2-3. Brianna Kreft also put the ball in play with hard grounders and line drives 3-4 times at the plate to draw an error each time. Shelby Gilsdorff had her first varsity plate experience. She went two for two by hitting a double and a single.
“This was a great game to see the players working hard and being aggressive both on the field and in the batters box,” added McNamara.
Emma Swenson and Ireland Winter split pitching duties in game two with Emma lasting three innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out five. Ireland Winter came in for the last three innings, allowing one hit and zero runs, while striking out five and only walking one. “It was great to see our younger pitchers come out and throw a varsity game as if they have been doing it all year,” noted Coach McNamara. “The varsity team backed them up the entire time and the girls got some quality innings on the mound. In the field, some spectacular plays happened. Hailey Bennett had a wonderful heads-up double play and Lexi Bright and Hannah Anderson combined for an incredible out at first from the deep right field line. The stop Lexi made was unreal and to pop up and fire to one and see senior Hannah Anderson do a full split to catch the ball and get the runner out was fantastic. It was our biggest WOW play in the field.
Our game highlight came from Ireland winter who parked her first home run.”
West Central Area scattered 13 hits in the game. Lexi Bright, Bennett, Winter, and Hannah Anderson all managed multiple hits for WCA. Bennett and Bright each collected three hits apiece.
“It was a beautiful night to play ball and our girls did extremely well,” concluded McNamara. “It was fun to see some younger kids get playing time, mound time and running experience.”
