The M State Fergus Falls Spartan athletic department held their 45th All Sports Banquet Monday April 23 at Pebble Lake Golf Course. This event recognizes the individual and team accomplishments of the Spartan athletic teams. Also included in the evening is the selection by the coaching staff of the Student Athlete of the Year and the Coaches Award.
Sam Lupkes, Female Student Athlete of the Year
Sophomore Sam Lupkes from Wheaton has been selected as the 2018 Female Student Athlete of the Year. Sam is a two year participant in basketball and softball for the Lady Spartans and excelled in each.
In basketball, Sam was named to the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) 2018 All-Defensive Team. Sam led the Lady Spartans in rebounding pulling down an average of 8 rebounds a game and was the second leading scorer with an average of 12 points per game.
In softball, Sam led the team in several offensive categories. She led the Lady Spartans with a .491 batting average, 3 home runs, and 26 runs batted in. She has been nominated for All Division status but that has not yet been determined.
Sam plans to continue her education on the Moorhead campus of M State and earn a degree in Surgical Technician.
Chris Tungseth, Male Student Athlete of the Year
Fergus Falls native and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy graduate Chris Tungseth received the Male Student Athlete of the Year Award for his work in the classroom and the court.
As a Freshman, Chris played both football and basketball for the Spartans. His sophomore year Chris focused on basketball and averaged 18 points a game, led the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game, and shot 42% on his three point field goals. Chris set a school record when he converted 10 three pointers in a game on his way to scoring 46 points against Mesabi Range College on January 5, 2018. Chris finished his career second all time in school history in three point field goals.
For his work on the court, Chris was rewarded with several honors including being named to the MCAC All State team, which includes players from both the Northern and Southern divisions of the MCAC, and first team All Southern Division.
Chris also excelled in the classroom and was very active in many clubs and organizations on campus. He also excelled as an assistant coach for the Spartan softball team. He is undecided about a college of choice at this time.
Male and Female Coaches Awards
The Spartan coaching staff also selects a male and female recipient for the Coaches Award. This award is presented to a student athlete that has been extremely important to the athletic department in attitude and willingness to assist where needed.
Female Coaches Award
Claire Mathiesen, a sophomore from Battle Lake, was the worthy recipient of the 2018 Female Coaches Award. Claire played volleyeball and basketball for two seasons at M State and was an integral part of each team. Claire was named MCAC All Division 2nd team for volleyball. She also excelled in the classroom earning Academic All Division and has been named to the MCAC Elite Team which takes only the student athletes that excel academically and athletically.
Claire is also a manager on the baseball team and is involved in many aspects of the college. She is known for her great work ethic and smiling face whenever called upon to help.
Male Coaches Award
It is not very often a freshman receives this award, but it was unanimous to present the award to freshman Jordan Kern. Jordan is from Wadena and is a member of the Spartan golf team. Jordan’s contributions throughout the season helped the Spartan’s win the Region XIII title once again and Jordan will be a member of the team that heads to the NJCAA National Golf Tournament in Chautauqua, NY in early June.
Jordan was a key member of the work staff at home basketball games and was available any time he was called upon to work and help in any area he could. Jordan will return to M State Fergus Falls for his sophomore year and another year of golf.
