Pelican Rapids Wins Baseball Double Header from Barnesville

By Craig Olson

The Pelican Rapids Vikings baseball team got their first 2 wins of the season against Barnesville Thursday with scores of 14-1 and 8-4.

In the first game, shortened by the 10 run rule, Pelican scored in every inning, building on an 8-1 lead with 5 runs in the 4th to put the game away.  Pelican rapped out 12 hits and also received 9 walks.  Four Barnesville errors were also significant in the lopsided loss.  Hayden Christenson led the offense with 3 base hits.  Getting 2 hits each were Nick Shermerhorn, Dillon Such, Matt Osborne and Jacob Gottenborg, both doubles.  Tyler Haarstick had the other base hit, a 2 run single.  Oakley Kress got the complete game win, striking out 8, walking 3 and allowing 5 hits. Starting pitcher Caleb Stetz got 2 of the Barnesville hits and got the loss.

In game 2, Pelican jumped out to an 8-2 lead after 4 and held off a Barnesville last inning 2 run rally to win 8-4.  The Trojans scored one run in the top of the 1st off starting pitcher Nick Schermerhorn but Pelican came back with 2 of their own on a walk, an error and Damian Britton’s 2 out single.  The Vikings got one more in the 2nd on a walk, an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball.  Barnesville got within 1 when Jack Trowbridge doubled with 2 outs in the 3rd.  Pelican got 3 more in their half of the inning.   Gottenborg doubled and later scored on a passed ball.  With one out, Britton walked and Kress singled.  A passed ball moved the runners up, a throwing error on the same play scored Britton.  The left fielder then made an errant throw, allowing Kress to score.  Osborne followed with a single and later scored on another Trojan error and passed ball.  The Vikings got their final run in the 4th on a walk to Schermerhorn, Gottenborg getting hit by a pitch and a passed ball.  Barnesville got 2 in the top of the 5th on Brady Tweeton’s double, Connor Morse’s single and an infield error before Schermerhorn got the final out on a strikeout.  Schermerhorn went the distance, giving up 7 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2.  Reggie Funk caught both games.  Though being out hit 7-5, the 6 Trojan errors were the main factor in the outcome of the game.
