Ashby Takes Two from Comets

By Craig Olson - Ashby, MN

The Ashby baseball team swept a double header from Hillcrest on Thursday, winning 8-5 and 14-0.

Hillcrest built a 5-1 lead in the opener, but Ashby stormed back by scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Sam Ihrke (1-1, 3 runs, BB, SB) led the game off with a double, followed by a walk by Nick Foss (1-1, 2 runs, RBI, 2 BB, SB), and then Trevor Antuna (1-3, RBI) singled to bring in Ihrke. Hillcrest scored 2 more runs through Ihrke's hit-by-pitch and Foss's RBI double. Hunter Christopherson (2-3, 1 RBI) then drove Foss in on a single to the right fielder.

Trevor Antuna (4.2 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 7 SO) only allowed 1 run through 4 innings. Ashby's offense came alive in the 5th inning, batting around the order and scoring 7 runs.

"If we made one or two plays in the field, this game is ours,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Zach Nersten. “Our guys came out ready to play in the 1st inning and took a 5-1 lead into the 5th inning. Trevor pitched phenomenally well and we couldn't have asked more from him. He kept Ashby off-balance with his off-speed pitches which resulted in 7 strikeouts. Nick continues to sting the ball and is in command when he steps up to bat, and Sam and Hunter are making great contact, too. Brent Ferenczy has been steady for us by pitching in relief; he throws strikes and gets us out of jams. I am proud of our team for competing, but we need to learn from our mistakes and close out games like this in the future."

Ashby jumped out to a 7 run lead in the 1st inning of game two. Jaden Norby hit a 2-run home run to center field in the 2nd inning which plated runs number 8 and 9. Ashby scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning and 2 runs in the 4th inning to complete their 14-0 win. For Hillcrest, brothers John and Mikey Vall received their first pitching experience. Mikey pitched to 4 batters and struck out 2.
