Stroh Wins Hammer Throw Title at Drake Relays

By Craig Olson

Senior Steffan Stroh won the collegiate hammer throw title, and the North Dakota State men's track and field team posted several strong relay performances to cap the weekend at the Drake Relays.

Stroh, an Underwood High School graduate and former member of the Ottertail Central Bulldogs track and field team, recorded the second-best hammer mark of his career, reaching 217-9 (66.39m) on his first attempt of the meet. He is ranked 22nd in the NCAA this season.

Stroh also placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 58-10.75.

Stroh will participate in the final home event of his college career on Friday when the Bison host the NDSU Tune-Up beginning with the Hammer Throw at 11:30am.

Another former Bulldog, and Battle Lake High School graduate Eric VanErp, a freshman at NDSU, won the high jump (6-04.75) and was fourth in the triple jump (44-05.5) at the Cobber Twilight Meet on Wednesday, April 25. He finished fifth in the high jump (6-01.25) and the long jump (22-00.75) at the Ron Masanz Classic on Saturday.

During the Indoor Season both Stroh (shot put, weight throw) and Tony Ukkelberg (heptathlon) made the Summit League All-League Team.

After an outstanding indoor season, Ukkelberg, a Battle Lake High School graduate and sophomore at NDSU, has been sidelined for the entire outdoor season with a stress fracture in his right foot. He will be redshirted this spring, leaving him three more years to compete in the outdoor track and field season for the Bison.
