The M state Lady Spartan softball team played well, but dropped a pair of games Wednesday to the Concordia College Cobber Junior Varsity team. Concordia College was the host and they took game one by a score of 8-1 and game two 9-6.
Macky Warne pitched very well for the Lady Spartans in game one and her defense made some nice plays behind her, keeping the score close for most of the game. Concordia scored two in the first but Warne settled in and gave the Lady Spartans a chance. The score was 2-0 in the fifth before the Lady Spartans went to work. Katie Merrick walked, moved to second on a fielder’s choice by Mackenzie Swanson, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by Cailey Bryant to make the score 2-1 Cobbers.
The Lady Spartans had plenty of baserunners and hit the ball hard, but failed to get the clutch hit they needed. The Cobbers would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as they scored six runs to make the score 8-1. A one out single by Bryant in the seventh was all the Lady Spartans could muster for a rally and the game ended 8-1.
Warne pitched very well but took the complete game loss. Tarryn Justesen had two hits in the game.
Game two was a back and forth battle that saw a couple of late lead changes but the Lady Spartans came up short 9-6. Concordia opened the scoring with a single run in the first for a 1-0 lead. That score stood until the Lady Spartans started rolling in the fourth inning. Sid Imsande banged a long double off the left field fence. Tarryn Justesen plated her with an RBI single. Taylor Kugler followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Kugler promptly stole second and Tina Rice singled to score Justesen. Kugler would score on a fielder’s choice by Katie Merrick and the final run of the inning scored on a bases loaded walk to Swanson. That made the score 4-1 in favor of the Lady Spartans.
The Cobbers answered right back. They used a couple of base hits, a walk, and a throwing error by the Lady Spartans to score four runs to retake the lead 5-4.
The Lady Spartans would answer right back and, once again, Imsande started the rally for the Lady Spartans. In the top of the fifth, she singled to left. Sam Lupkes then stepped to the plate and launched a long, two run home run to left center field to give the Lady Spartans the lead at 6-5.
Unfortunately, the Lady Spartans couldn’t hold the lead. The Cobbers scored two in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead 7-6 and added two in the bottom of the sixth for the final score of 9-6.
Tarryn Justesen pitched the complete game for the Lady Spartans and took the loss. Lupkes led the Lady Spartans with two runs batted in while Imsande and Justesen each had two hits.
The Lady Spartans have Thursday off but will host Ridgewater College at home Friday. Game time is 3:00.
