Battle Lake Boys Overcome Halftime Deficit to Beat Hillcrest

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

The Battle Lake boys basketball team overcame a 16-12 halftime deficit at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls on Tuesday night and went on to post a 39-31 victory over the Comets in a defensive-minded Little Eight Conference matchup.

“We had a slow start, and Hillcrest started out the game with a lot of intensity,” reported Battle Lake Head Coach Dan Peterka. “They had us on our heels throughout the first half.  We started the 2nd half with much more energy. We ran our offense better and shot our free throws very well.  We were able to come away with a nice win.”

Brady VanErp and Colton Kirschbaum led the Battlers with 11 points apiece. Isaiah Dorn added 9 and Nick VanErp scored 8.

Leaders for Hillcrest were Sam Ihrke (10 points), Sander Furstol (9 points, 6 rebounds), Zak Zwiers (4 points, 11 rebounds) and Gabriel Preston (4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals).

The Comets shot just 30% (13-44) from the field and hit only 2-of-16 (13%) 3-pointers.

"We were just 6-for-27 shooting the ball in the second half," said Hillcrest Head Coach Gregg Preston.  "We did a nice job on the offensive glass and both teams played hard.  Sam Ihrke did a nice job attacking the basket and finishing tonight."
