Battlers Hold Off Tigers for Two Point Win in Rothsay

By Craig Olson - Rothsay, MN

Allison Marso led four Battle Lake girls in double figures on Thursday night as the Battlers won a Little Eight Conference contest in Rothsay, beating the Tigers 52-50. Battle Lake led 25-24 at the half.

“We played a tight one tonight in Rothsay,” acknowledged Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  “We trailed much of the first half, but were able to hit some free throws to finish out the half with a one point lead.  In the second half, it continued to be a back and forth game with neither team able to create a significant lead.  We were able to make just enough shots late in the game and get some stops to secure the win.  When we were aggressive and attacked the basket good things happened tonight.  Defensively, we struggled against the post play of the Tigers early and they hit some key perimeter shots later in the second half to make it a battle the whole way.  It was nice to see scoring contributions from a number of players tonight.”

Stacy Christensen, Lexi Newark and Tessa Kortlever all contributed ten points for the Battlers.

Jayna Gronewold scored 20 to lead all scorers and Kenzie Lankow recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Lexie Lankow just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 boards. Jenna Fabre added 8 points and 6 rebounds. Gronewold also gathered in eight rebounds.

“It was a hard fought battle from start to finish,” said Rothsay Head Coach Anita Heier. “We rebounded well, but had a hard time getting our shots to fall consistently.”
