Knight Wrestlers Have 4-0 Week

Sports bring out many principles when it comes to competition. How a team or individual goes after what they want can be decided by many factors. The common notion of having a goal to be successful is certainly one, and in fact, drives many of the others. Having watched the West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville wrestlers compete last week, it brings to mind another; a goal of being valuable.

Recognizing and understanding ones value when tied to a team cannot be overstated. In the sport of wrestling, this can come in many forms. Is it the grapplers job to pick up six points by fall or three by decision? Perhaps his job during a match may be to play defense, defending a fall limiting the other teams gains. Is he a starter or a substitute that comes off the bench when asked and gathers points for his team? Perhaps wrestler is matched up against a powerhouse in order to use another wrestler's scoring ability elsewhere to help the squad. Like any other sport, wrestling can be played heads up or, when under the tutelage of a savvy coach, the team may look for mismatches to gain position.

WCA/A/B-E does all of the above. Head Coach Brandon Gruchow puts his wrestlers in the best position possible to help each other. Each member of Knight Wrestling has a value to the team, although it may not always be the same and in many of the contests changes by the match, these young men are finding out the meaning of the word valuable. They are finding out that when having value becomes a goal, the success automatically attracts itself to them.

In no small feat the wrestlers produced another 4-0 week. Thursday found the group in Bertha dispatching a pair of Section 6A teams in the 2-8 Barnesville Trojans and the 7-8 Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie Raiders. Friday they traveled to Browerville and knocked off the 13-5 #3 ranked Minneota Vikings and the AA powerhouse 16-8 Pierz Pioneers. When looking at the match scores below it is apparent that it took every wrestler who hit the mat, to at some point, pull his weight in order to score or slow down the other team. That...is value!

About the night in Browerville Coach Gruchow said, “Our guys rose up just as we had hoped. We put together two solid performances. It’s fun to see the guys wrestle for the team and leave it all out on the mat.” A captain of the Knights Kaleb Getz added, “It was a great team effort. The people who needed to step up stepped up. It was an all-around good night for us.”

WCA/A/B-E will be back in action Tuesday, January 30 when they travel to Frazee to face the #2 ranked 18-5 Hornets. Thursday, February 1 the Knights have a triangular in Belgrade with the 10-6 Royalton-Upsala Royals and the 17-2 #9 ranked Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars. Saturday the team participates in the Park Region Conference tournament, hosted by Royalton-Upsala.
