Knight Wrestlers Go 40
By Kevin Fick Barrett, MN
The West Central Area/Ashby/BrandonEvansville Knight grapplers got after it this week jumping into the dual heavy portion of their schedule and finishing the week with 4 wins.
The #4 ranked 101 Knights opened competition Thursday in Wadena facing a pair of Section 6A opponents in the 311 hometown Wolverines and the 45 Breckenridge Cowboys. Although the Knights won both duals and outscored opponents by a margin of 133 to 19 the team seemed a bit off. There were a bevy of falls and competitive matches wrestled but the energy level was not at a pitch. Perhaps this happens when facing opponents with a plethora of forfeit holes or possibly the team was looking past opponents but whatever the case it caught more than just this writers attention.
Head Coach Brandon Gruchow explained the triangular like this,”Tonight we got two wins against section opponents so that's always a good thing. However, I didn't feel like as a team we got after it tonight on the mat. There were some individuals that did come out and wrestle well, I just feel like as a group we could have came out a little more on fire. We will not be able to wrestle like we did tonight when we take on KMS and Pipestone tomorrow and expect to win.”
Friday the team traveled south to Kerkhovan to face a pair of Class A sluggers in the 912 Section 3A Pipestone Area Arrows and the #13 ranked 96 Section 5A KerkhovanMurdockSunburg Fighting Saints. Both teams were entrants in last years state tournament and both teams boast quality wrestlers who can flip a score in the blink of an eye. The Knights showed up with the ears pinned back and took care of business on the mat. Although Pipestone was a bit down from last season KMS was ready for battle. During the dual with the Fighting Saints there were more lead changes in the contest than the last three minutes of the Viking Saints game a week ago. In total the lead changed hands six times. WCA/A/BE looked sharp and took home two victories over quality teams.
Coach Gruchow added, “It takes everyone to win against good teams like KMS and Pipestone. Tonight was a much better representation of what we can accomplish when we put in a full team effort. We have to move guys around and make adjustments....it takes everyone. Our guys responded well and took charge, this is a good building block to what lies ahead of us in the weeks to come.”
The grapplers will have a busy week ahead of them again as they wrestle a make up triangular in Bertha on Thursday night versus the BerthaHewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie Raiders and the Barnesville Trojans. Friday the team will travel to Browerville for a dual tournament in which they face the #7 Class A Minneota Vikings and the #16 Class AA Pierz Pioneers.
