Comets Top Tigers at Hillcrest

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy boys basketball team led Rothsay 22-20 at halftime and went on to post a 45-39 win over the Tigers in Fergus Falls.

“Both teams played with intensity and the defensive play for both Hillcrest and Rothsay was very good,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Gregg Preston. “After a 2 point halftime lead, we came out the second half on an 8-0 to take a 30-20 lead halfway through the second half. As Rothsay made a late run, Eric Konynenbelt and Gabe Preston both hit big three-point baskets late in the contest.  With a two-point lead in the last minute, Sam Ihrke connected on 4 straight free throws to seal a very nice win. Nick and Micah Foss both had very quality minutes and Sander Frustol pulled down 13 rebounds.”

Leaders for Hillcrest were Konynenbelt (14 points, 2 assists), Ihrke (10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), Preston (8 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds) and Frustol (5 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists).

Rothsay was led by Wyatt Curtis with 18 points and Colby Larson with 8.

“It was another tough battle in the Little Eight Conference,” said Rothsay Head Coach Taylor Fuhs. “I credit the Hillcrest boys and coaches. They got almost every 50/50 ball and rebounded really well. We played well in stretches, but didn’t play consistent enough throughout the second half.”
