Hovland Commits to Spartans

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

Sydney Hovland, senior from Underwood High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball and basketball for the Minnesota State Community and Technical College Spartans.

Sydney is a right side hitter/setter and has 4 years of varsity volleyball experience. As a junior Sydney was named to the All-Conference 2nd team and as a senior was named team captain and All-Conference 1st team.

“Sydney’s extensive varsity volleyball experience and her years of being a part of a successful, dominant program will be a tremendous advantage for us,” said Spartan volleyball coach Abby Crowser. “Her ability as a strong hitter and a solid setter is a wonderful combination. She’ll be a valuable addition to our 2018 volleyball team.”

On the basketball court, Sydney has been a 4 year starter and was named All-Conference her freshman, sophomore and junior year. She was selected as Offensive MVP her sophomore and junior year and joined the 1000 point club her junior year. She was selected as a team captain this year and the Rockets are currently 9-4.

“Sydney is a solid addition to our 2018-2019 basketball team. She is a versatile player who can score from the 3 point land, off the dribble or from the post position. She is a very coachable athlete with a lot of knowledge. I look forward to her success at M State,” said Janice Hendrickson, women’s basketball coach.

Sydney is the daughter of Spartan Alumni’s Brian and Kris Hovland.
