Knights Fall Behind Early but Rally to Beat Ashby

By Craig Olson - Ashby, MN

The West Central Area Knights picked up a hard fought 50-43 win over the Ashby Arrows in Ashby on Tuesday night.

WCA Head Coach Kraig Hunter said, "This was a good win.  Considering we fell behind 11-0 and 23-10 at one point, the fact that Ashby always plays us tough in Ashby and when you consider the talent of Ashby's top players, it was a good win.  No one thought it would be easy and it wasn't."

"Ashby came out shooting the ball really well to take an 11-0 lead.  We did a good job to get it to 26-20 by the half and scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 27-26 lead."

"I coached against John Kent years ago, and like usual, he has his players disciplined and playing hard.  They have played many good area teams tough this year."

The Arrows outrebounded the Knights 33-23 while the Knights won the turnover battle with eight compared to 13 for Ashby.  The Knights hit 19-41 shots for 46% and Ashby shot 17-43 for 40%.

Hunter said, "We had a real good defensive effort in the second half holding them to 7 field goals in the second half (7-21) and forcing some turnovers."

Leaders for the Knights were Logan Paulson with 18 points and 7 rebounds, Brady Sabolik with 8 points and 5 assists, Nathan Kaye with 6 points, Dawson Staples with 6 points and 4 rebounds, Ross Anderson 4 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals, Jack VanKempen with 3 points and 2 blocked shots, Jacob Bright with 3 points and Logan Nadgwick with 2 points and 3 assists.

Jaden Norby led Ashby with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, Scott Johnson had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, Christian Norby finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, Dakota Ecker with 3 points and 2 steals, and Noah Johnson with 2 points and 2 steals.

“I’m very happy with our effort tonight against a quality team,” said Coach Kent of the Arrows. “We still have to work on getting into basketball shape and that will come with more games.”

The Arrows will host Parkers Prairie on Thursday, while West Central Area entertains Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta.
