Thursday, January 4 the West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville wrestlers hosted a inter Park Region Conference and Section 6A dual with the New York Mills Eagles. The Eagles brought with them a formidable 9-2 dual record, and did neutralize two of WCA/A/B-E's heavy hitters, however the Knights depth and ability to score out-legged the scrappy contenders from up north.
The dual began with a decision for the Knights courtesy of Anthony Sykora. Mills responded with a decision of their own then followed up with a fall and another decision swinging the score to their favor by way of 12-3. Kaleb Getz exposed a weakness in the Eagles lineup gathering a forfeit and Chris Onstad gave the Knights the lead by three with a fall at 138 lbs. NYM posted a pin at 145 lbs. and a 7-4 decision at 152 lbs. which swung the lead back to the Eagles with a score of 21-15. Kaden Spindler, Levi Larkin and Wyatt Olson all posted pins giving the Knights back the lead and then some. Aaron Holmes took the mat and a forfeit at 195 lbs. which put the dual out of reach at 39-21. Mills scored once more with a decision at 220 lbs. and Devin Stone closed out the evening with a decision for WCA/A/B-E ending the contest at 42-24.
Head Coach Brandon Gruchow summarized the night with, “Overall, I felt like it was a good team performance. We started out with a big win which I was hoping would help set the tone of the match and then we gave up three matches in a row. I think we maybe came into a couple of those matches a little overconfident and we will learn a lesson from it and move on.”
About a few of his wrestlers Gruchow continued with, “It sure has been nice to count on Spindler and Larkin during the dual settings, they like the dual atmosphere and do well under pressure. Wyatt Olson has definitely been gaining some confidence on the mat and is starting to to a good job stepping in and doing his part. I also feel that Nibbe wrestled a good match against a highly ranked opponent and it was fun seeing Stone get a good solid win.”
The Knights will wrestle next at home again, facing the Border West Buccaneers on Tuesday, December 9. Varsity wrestling is scheduled for 7:30 pm. Thursday the team will travel to Bertha for a triangular with the Barnesville Trojans and the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers-Prairie Raiders. Wrestling will begin at 5 pm.
