Battle Lake Boys Overcome Half Time Deficit to Beat Chargers

By Craig Olson - Brandon, MN

Battle Lake traveled to Brandon for a Little Eight Conference boys basketball contest on Thursday night and the Battlers escaped with a tight 48-46 victory over the Chargers. The Battlers trailed 32-27 at the half.

“We did a nice job of battling down the stretch after trailing a lot of the game,” said Battle Lake Head Coach Dan Peterka. “Nick VanErp hit two free throws with under 10 seconds left to take the lead. We were able to get a stop on the defensive end, and get a big win on the road. I was happy with how we defended in the 2nd half, and with how we shared the ball on the offensive end.”

Battle Lake was led by Bennet Cameron with 15 points and Colton Kirschbaum with 11 points. VanErp finished with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists, while Isaiah Dorn contributed 8 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

Leaders for Brandon-Evansville were Taylor Bitzan (17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks), James Strese (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Jake Hintermeister (8 points).

“I thought we played our game and for the most part executed the scouting report,” said B-E Head Coach Trent Hintermeister. “We lost our composure down the stretch a bit and Battle Lake took advantage. Taylor Bitzan played his best game of the year tonight. Playing in games like these give us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes, we must do that! Congrats to Battle Lake. They always play hard.”

Battle Lake (6-3) will play Pelican Rapids at 3:45pm Saturday at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Brandon-Evansville (5-4) is off until Thursday, January 11 when they play at Underwood.
