Lady Knights Claim Valkyrie Title in Pelican Rapids

By Eric Schoenbauer - Pelican Rapids, MN

The West Central Area Lady Knights had a Thursday matchup against the Battle Lake Battlers in the Pelican Rapids Holiday Tournament, which they won 69-42. That win put them up against Frazee in the title game of the Valkyrie Tournament on Friday. The Knights won the championship with a 58-49 victory over the Hornets.

The Knights opened up from the very beginning of the game against Battle Lake. The first half had everything going the Knights way and the lead grew to a 36-11 score at halftime. The Knights had their lead grow immediately in the second half and then the Battlers went on a run and cut into the lead. The Knights would respond and win the second half by two points.

“Our ability to dictate tempo in the game was the reason the girls were very successful tonight,” said WCA Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. “The Battlers are a disciplined team and they worked hard throughout the game, and that did not allow us to relax tonight.”

The Knights were led by Amanda Dreschel and Lexi Bright with 14 points apiece. Bright added 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block. Amanda Dreschel added an assist, a steal and 3 rebounds. Brianna Kreft had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also added an assist and 2 steals. Ella Van Kempen had 11 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Demara Bumgardner had 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Morgan Woodle had 5 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Izzy Wittbodt scored 4 points and a steal. Kaleigh Anderson put in 4 points, an assist and 2 steals. Hailey Bennett had a rebound and 2 steals along with stellar defense throughout the night. Kaitlyn Sanstead had an assist and 2 steals.

Against Frazee, the game opened up back and forth and then the Lady Knights took a slight lead with 10 minutes to play in the first half. The lead would grow to double digits only to be cut in the last few minutes of the first half to a 30-23 lead. The Lady Knights came out of the second half and began to grow the lead again to only have the Hornets fight back and cut it to a single digit lead. The Lady Knights hit some late free-throws to finish the game with the win and the Valkyrie Championship.

Tonight the girls played a solid game and it’s fun to see contrasting styles of play at work. The Lady Knights next game will be Friday January 5 at home against Minnewaska Area.
