Battle Lake Girls Finish Third in Valkyrie Division

By Craig Olson - Pelican Rapids, MN

The Battle Lake girls basketball team lost their first round game in the Valkyrie Division of the Minnesota National Bank Holiday Classic on Thursday in Pelican Rapids, losing 69-42 to West Central Area, however, the lady Battlers overcame a thirteen point deficit on Friday to win the third place game against Warroad, 51-38.

"The Knights controlled the game Thursday from the beginning," noted Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  "They shot the ball really well in the first half and we just couldn't keep up."

Lexi Bright scored 9 of her 14 points in the first half and WCA led 36-11 at the half.  In the second half, Allison Marso scored 14 of her game high 16 points, putting in 4 three-pointers.

"In the second half we were able to get some offense going and put up 31 points," added Marso.

Stacy Christensen and Kate Christensen finished with 10 and 8 points, respectively.

WCA was led by Bright, Amanda Drechsel with 14 and Brianna Kreft with 11.

"We really struggled in the first half against Warroad on Friday and found ourselves down at the break, 29-17," reported Marso.  "The two Warroad post players, Alexis Syverson and Madison Pickar dominated in the half, scoring 20 of the Warriors first half points.  In the second half we did a better job offensively and defensively.  We were able to hold them to nine points and scored 34 points.  We were able to make our comeback by making 21 free throws in the half."

Allison Marso led Battle Lake with 15 points and Stacy Christensen contributed a dozen.

Leaders for Warroad were Pickar and Syverson with 17 and 8 points, respectively.

Battle Lake (2-7) stopped a five game losing streak with the win.  They will travel to Fergus Falls for a game against Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Friday, January 5 and will play Pelican Rapids at Concordia College in Moorhead on Saturday, January 6 at 2:00pm.
