Vikings Place Five in Double Figures in Win Over Underwood

By Craig Olson - Pelican Rapids, MN

Pelican Rapids guard McHale Korf led all scorers with 17 points as the Vikings beat Underwood 72-47 in the opening round of the Minnesota National Bank Holiday Classic on Thursday in Pelican Rapids.

The Vikings led 42-32 at the half and had a balanced scoring attack as four other players reached double figures in addition to Korf. Oakley Kress and Jacob Gottenborg both had 12, while Hayden Christenson and Zack Sjolie had 11 each.

"This was a nice win for our guys coming off the Christmas break," head coach John Gullingsrud stated. "We had a very balanced scoring effort with five guys reaching double figures as we did a nice job of moving the ball on offense to find the open man. We were also very happy with our defense in the second half as we held the Rockets to 15 points."

Underwood was led by Brodey Rocholl's 16 points and Camen Andrews added 11. Winston Heifort contributed 10 points.

“Pelican outplayed us on the defensive and offensive ends of the court,” said Underwood Head Coach Jesse Arbuckle.  “They were much more disciplined and had a balanced attack.  They played an all-around complete game. We didn't show our type of basketball this evening.  We didn't play with the same discipline and ball movement that makes us successful.  On defense, the consistent intensity and speed was just not there.”

Underwood dropped to 2-4 overall while Pelican Rapids improved their record to 4-3. The Vikings will play West Central Area tomorrow night at 7:45pm in the championship game. Underwood will play for third place against Warroad at 2:30pm.
