Knights Defeat Warroad in Pelican Rapids Holiday Tournament

The West Central Area Knights defeated the Warroad Warriors 57-44 in the first round of the Minnesota National Bank Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament in Pelican Rapids on Thursday night. 

The Knights hit 24-51 shots for 47% and made 8-15 free throws.  Warroad made only 28% of their shots going 18-65 and made 1-2 free throws.  The Knights outrebounded the Warriors 44-30. 

The Knights took a 26-19 halftime lead.  The Warriors were able to come back and take a brief 36-34 lead but the Knights responded with a 23-5 run to go up 57-41 with about a minute to go in the game.    

Coach Kraig Hunter said, "We were proud of the guys' fortitude and the poise we played with once the Warriors took the lead and how we responded by getting defensive stops and going on the 23-5 run to close out the game.  We had a pretty good night defensively.  We applied better ball pressure and we had a great night on the boards.  Our post players had a good night inside again." 

Leaders for the Knights were Dawson Staples with 24 points and 5 rebounds and Logan Paulson with 14 points, 8 rebound, and 4 assists.  Ross Anderson led the Knights rebounding effort with 15 rebounds while adding 6 assists and 2 points. 

Brady Sabolik had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals; Logan Nadgwick had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals; Nathan Kaye had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists; and Colton Wutzke added 2 rebounds and 1 assist. 

Scoring for Warroad was Isaac Falk-Stoskopf with 14, Tyler Fox 11, Jett Schoen 10, Zach Heppner 4, Kyle Spenst 3, and Jeremy Cole 2. 

The Knights (3-3) stopped a three game losing streak with the win and will now face Pelican Rapids in the tournament championship game on Friday at 7:45pm.
