Ashby Boys Drop Home Opener to Hillcrest

By Craig Olson - Ashby, MN

Ashby had their home opener Thursday night against the Hillcrest Comets and fell to them by a score of 55-39.

The Arrows were led in scoring by Scott Johnson with 19 followed by Jaden Norby with 12 and Christian Norby with 8. The Arrows were led in Rebounding by Jaden Norby with 8, followed by his brother Christian with 7.

Ashby didn't shoot the ball very well tonight, from the field as they shot 25%, only 10% from behind the arc and 65% from the free throw line.

“We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight, but a lot of that was due to the tenacious defense that Hillcrest attacked us with,” noted Ashby Head Coach John Kent. “We turned the ball over too much tonight and weren't patient enough on offense. Hillcrest is a well-disciplined team that is very aggressive on defense and very patient on offense.  I am happy with how hard we played and our overall team effort, just need to fix a few things so we can get a win on the season.”

Hillcrest shot 41% (19-46) from the field and made 42% (11-26) of their shots from 3-point range. Gabriel Preston led the Comets with 21 points and he was joined in double figures by Sam Ihrke with 12 points. Ihrke led the Comets on the boards with 8 rebounds. Nick Foss distributed a team high 4 assists and Sander Frustol grabbed 4 steals.

“We had another intense, disciplined team defensive effort tonight,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Gregg Preston.  “Our perimeter defenders put good pressure on the ball and did a great job of protecting the middle of the floor. Gabriel Preston's 7 of 9 from beyond the 3 point line helped to extend the Arrow's zone defense and Sam Ihrke played another outstanding all-around game. Jaden Norby and Scott Johnson led a physical and much-improved Arrow team by their physical play in the post.”
