Lady Knights Dominant in Win Over Ashby

By Eric Schoenbauer - Ashby, MN

The West Central Area Lady Knights traveled to Ashby to take on the Arrows on Tuesday night. WCA dominated both halves on the way to a 61-29 victory.

The game started out with solid possessions for the Lady Knights and they started to build a lead at 14-3. The Arrows battled back and it was pretty an even end to the half with the score being 28-13. The second half the Lady Knights began to build a bigger lead, but the Arrows never backed down and worked hard until the final horn.

The Lady Knights were led by Morgan Woodle with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ella Van Kempen had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and blocks. Brianna Kreft scored 7 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Lexi Bright scored 9 points, had 5 steals and 2 rebounds. Amanda Dreschel had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist. Hailey Bennett had 7 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds and a block. Demara Bumgardner had 5 points, 3 assists 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Kaitlyn Sanstead scored 2 points, had 3 assists, 4 steals and a rebound. Izzy Wittbrodt 2 points, a steal and a rebound. Kaleigh Anderson grabbed 2 rebounds tonight.

“The girls played hard tonight and we continually grew the lead. We do need to understand pushing the ball is good, but if nothing is there we can be patient,” said Coach Eric Schoenbauer.

Leading the way for Ashby was Kalista Aamot with 11 points and 8 boards. Josey Ness added 7 points and 6 boards, and Catherine Koefod contributed 7 points and 3 boards.

"Even with the score the way it was our girls played hard and never quit from the tip to the final horn," reported Ashby Head Coach Troy Mickelson.  "We continue to work hard and are getting better at handling pressure defenses.  The Knight had good half court pressure tonight which led to us turning the ball over and never feeling quite comfortable in our offensive sets.  In the first half we did a better job of handliing their pressure and took good shots.  When we take our time and take what the defense gives us we are a much more effective team offensively.  In the second half we played more rushed on offense and at times forced the ball into the paint.  As the season goes on we will continue to get better at handling pressure defenses and we will continue to work on being comfortable in our offense.  Anna Thormodson, Celi Nelson and Tae-Yah Johnson all played tonight and worked hard on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.  I am proud of how our girls work and they continue to show grit."

The Lady Knights host the Hancock Owls on Friday night, while Ashby plays host to Rothsay in a Little Eight Conference contest.
