Section 6A Wrestling Preview

By Roger Mischke

MAT RATS SECTION 6A PREVIEW (2017-2018)
FAVORITES: WEST CENTRAL AREA KNIGHTS and the OTTERTAIL CENTRAL BULLDOGS

The Knights of West Central Area should be the favorites, they will return from their 25-3 dual meet campaign and state medals for fourth place honors. They have eight section place winners, including five state qualifiers of which two were medal winners, along with five others with a great deal of varsity experience. Kaden Spindler earned a fifth place medal at 145 41-7 and Levi Larkin earned a sixth place medal at 170 33-15 an qualifiers Jordan Lohse 34-9, Mason Nibbe 33-13 and Kaleb Stetz 25-16 all should be key leaders thru out the season. They did graduate five section place winners, including four state qualifiers, of which two were state runner ups.  That is a big loss, but look for this team to possibly challenge those outstanding dual meet numbers and to defend their conference honors. They should make a strong challenge to defend their dual meet title, if so they should challenge for state honors.

The Bulldogs of Ottertail Central have back from 12-10 dual meet campaign eight section place winners, two were state qualifiers, of which one was a state place winner and thirteen others a great deal of experience. Ben Naddy earned a fifth place medal at 113 38-4 and Nate Hart  38-4 along with Marc Hendricks 28-13, Max Naddy 24-16, Alex Erlandson 18-13 and Jace Leabo 20-23 should be their key leaders thru out the season. They did graduate four seniors last spring, including one section place a pair of that were injured were section place winners two years ago. Despite that loss, it appears that the Bulldogs should improve on those dual meet marks from last season. Look for the Bulldogs to challenge for both conference and Section dual honors.

DARKHORSES: STAPLES-MOTLEY CARDINALS and the BARNESVILLE TROJANS

The Cardinals will have back from their 10-6 dual meet campaign, ten section place winners, including three state qualifiers, one of which was a place winner. Spencer Miller earned a third place medal at 113 43-3, Owen Bjerga 34-8 and Blayne Dumpprope 26-16, Jasiah Paskewitz their state qualifiers and Kyle Serich 26-15 and Tyrell 21-10 to be their key leaders thru out the season. They did graduate three seniors last spring, including two state qualifiers, of which one won a state championship. They will miss their leadership, but look for the Cardinals to improve on their dual meet marks. They should make a challenge for conference honors and for one of the top four spots in a balanced section dual meet campaign.

The Trojans of Barnesville will have back from their 10-8 dual meet campaign, ten section place winners, including one state qualifier, a place winner and four others with varsity experience. Brady Tweeton earned a third place medal at 138 40-2, Preston Snobl, Chase Brenner, Caleb Stetz and Jackson Poepping all should be their key leaders thru out their season. They did graduate three section place winners, including two state qualifiers, of which one was a state place winner. Their leadership will surely be missed, but the Trojans should continue to improve over the course of the season, if they should stay healthy, they will improve on their dual meet numbers from last season. They should make a challenge for one of those top four spots in this balanced section dual meet campaign.

Look for the Raiders of BHV/PP and the Wolverines of Wadena-Deer Creek to challenge for one of those top four spots in this balanced section dual meet campaign. The Raiders will have back from their 16-8 dual meet campaign four section place winners, two were state qualifiers of which one was a state place winner and sixteen others with varying degrees of varsity experience. Holt Truax earned a fifth place medal in AA at 182 39-5 and Craig Orlando was a qualifier 27-13, Trever Arceneau, Devin Dean and Joe Baker should be their key leaders thru out the season. They did graduate five last spring, including three section place winners, of which earned a state tourney medal. That is a big loss, but look for them to have a good season and to possibly make a challenge for a top four spot. The Wolverines will have back from their 9-11 dual meet campaign, six section place winners, including one state qualifier and three with some varsity experience. Steven Erkenbrack a qualifier 26-13, Mason Snyder 27-10 and Chase Godel 20-15 should be their key leaders. They did graduate three section place winners, including one qualifier. That is a big loss, but look for this young team to continue to improve over the course of the season, they could surprise someone at the end of season.

There are a total of 19 state qualifiers, including seven medal winners that are returning in Section 6A, those not mentioned above include: Jake Erckenbrck  earned fourth place medal at 195 33-6, Matthew Frost 32-11 and Carter Haman 23-16 of New York Mills and Carson Haugrud 30-10 of Pelican Rapids.
