The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Detroit Lakes Tuesday to take on the Lakers. The Vikings overcame a 2-0 deficit to win the match 3-2 (17-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-9).
“The Lakers started very strong dominating both pins,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach Heidi Isaman. “We had a hard time getting touches on their powerful outside hitter Teeya Doppler and the right side hitter Bre Price. The Vikings spent most of the set playing defense and never really got our full offense going. Set 2 the Vikings got a little smarter about where their big blockers were and started to get a little more complex in our offense but were still struggling getting a touch on their big outside hitters. Set 3 the Vikings started hesitant again but a great serving run by Taylor Berndt and a few big kills by right side hitter Morgan Berg finally got the momentum to go our way. Our middle hitter went out with a minor injury and Riley Berg came off the bench and did a great job stepping into her middle role. Outside hitter Grace Johnson hit very aggressively at the pin and gave us a few great cut shots to score points. Set 4 was a back and forth battle. We were picking up our outside defense and serving more aggressively to get the Lakers out of system but were still struggling to get our middles fully into the offense. Middle hitter Adriana Torres decided to cut through the blockers instead of tip over them and made some monster kills for us on the outside. Set 5 middle hitter Jessica Weinrich got back in the game and was ready to play. She went on an 8 kill run to dominate the net and setter Sarah Thompson did a great job feeding her the ball. Overall, I was really proud of how these girls fought back after being down 2 sets to win our first 5 set match of the year. Setter Sarah Thompson did a great job all night getting all of our hitters the ball and working around their strong pin blockers. Middle hitters Jessica Weinrich and Adriana Torres had some big hitting runs and really used the block to their advantage. Our passers passed the ball pretty well all night and made some big adjustments to try and slow down the Lakers impressive pin hitters.”
Leader for Pelican Rapids were Berndt (5 aces, 10 digs), Torres (15 kills, 7 digs), Weinrich (11 kills), Isaman (8 digs), Thompson (36 set assists, 6 digs) and Morgan Berg (8 kills). Grace Johnson added 6 kills and Rachel Gottenborg recorded 5 digs and 2 ace serves.
The Vikings will end a busy 3 game week on Thursday hosting conference team the Barnesville Trojans.
