Oyloe to be Inducted into Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

Harley Oyloe of Fergus Falls will be inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud on Saturday, September 16. Batting practice and social begins at 4:00pm with the banquet at 5:30pm.

Oyloe is best known for pitching the Fergus Falls Red Sox to the state amateur baseball title in 1950 and for coaching the Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 baseball team to a state title in 1960.

Oyloe pitched Fergus Falls to a 3-0 win over Austin for the state Class AA title at St. Cloud in 1950. Two years later, in 1952, he was drafted onto the Willmar Class AA team that also won a state title.

A native of Moorhead, Oyloe had signed a baseball contract with the St. Paul Saints in 1940 and played one year of minor league baseball with the Grand Forks Chiefs in the Northern League.

Oyloe coached Fergus Falls American Legion baseball for nine years with three of those teams competing in the state tournament, including the 1960 state title squad.

Oyloe, who was in the inaugural induction class into the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce Sports Hall of Fame, ran a photo studio in Fergus Falls for many years and was later chief photographer for the Daily Journal. He and his wife, Carma, have a son, Mark.
